# Claude drops the separate Cowork mode and folds it into chat

2026-09-16. Long tasks, files and connectors now sit inside ordinary Claude conversations instead of a separate workspace.

On September 16 Anthropic merged Cowork, its workspace for longer agentic tasks, into regular Claude conversations, along with Claude Design. Claude now judges on its own whether a message needs a quick answer or a multi-step task using your files and connected apps.

Everything Cowork offered, including connectors, skills, recurring work and browser tools, is now available in any conversation. Anthropic also released Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta that day, with export to PowerPoint or PDF.

The merged experience reaches Claude Pro and Claude Max first, with Team and Free later, and Anthropic announced no price change. Claude still waits for you to start a task instead of monitoring for work on its own.

## Why it matters to you

If your agent work mostly ends in documents, research or slides, Claude may cover it without an always-on agent. Connect only the tools a task needs, because each connector widens what Claude can read.
